We don’t know exactly who first used the term but it was generally defined as a young woman of late teens on both sides of the Atlantic. Flappers' behavior was revolutionary for the time and redefined women's place in society forever. Flappers went to jazz clubs at night where they danced provocatively, smoked cigarettes, and dated freely. They bicycles, drove cars and drank alcohol openly, at a time when alcohol was illegal due to prohibition and they sniffed cocaine, which funnily was legal at the time. They were much freer with their sexuality and petting (foreplay) parties were very popular, remember this was not long after the Victorian era where women had virtually no rights or freedom. Flappers also began to work outside the home and challenging women's traditional roles. They also promoted voting and women's rights. With time came the development of dance styles then considered very shocking
Flappers had their own slang, with terms like "snuggle pup" (a man who frequents petting parties) Their slang reflected their promiscuity and drinking habits; "I have to go see a man about a dog” meant going to buy whiskey, and a "handcuff” was an engagement or wedding ring. Also reflective of their preoccupations, they had many ways to express approval, such as "That's so Jake" or "That's the bee's knees," or a more popular one, "the cat's pajamas." Many terms still in use originated as flapper slang, like "big cheese," meaning someone important; "to bump off," meaning to kill or murder; and "baloney," meaning nonsense. Flappers have become the icon of our 21st century with modern girls easily associating with the flapper lifestyle.
The flapper look usually meant 'heavy makeup’ Flappers liked to wear 'kiss proof' lipstick. Dark eyes, especially Kohl-rimmed, were the style. Blush came into fashion as well. Originally, pale skin was considered most attractive. However, tanned skin became increasingly popular after Coco Chanel got tanned after a holiday - it suggested to the flapper girls a life of leisure, without the need to work. Women also wanted to look fit, sporty, and healthy. A Flapper dress was essential, Flapper dresses were straight and loose, leaving the arms bare and dropping the waistline to the hips.Skirts rose to just below the knee , allowing flashes of knee to be seen when a girl danced or walked , although the way they danced made any long loose skirt flap up to show their knees. It is a common misconception that flappers put red rouge on their knees. High heels also came into fashion at the time, reaching nearly 2 inches. |
